Floor Standing Clocks

Floor standing clocks are usually referred to as either longcase clocks or grandfather clocks. These clocks are usually freestanding, weight-driven, pendulum clocks with the pendulum held inside the tower, or waist of the case.

For early floor clocks, they were either made of walnut or oak until the introduction of mahogany, which is the most popular wood used today. The interest in mahogany came from the increase of sales of contemporary furniture. Longcase clocks were originally designed by an English skillmaker, William Clement, in 1670.

These clocks are usually six to eight feet tall and often feature elegant carved designs on the clock face, thus making them a great conversation piece and a beautiful enhancement for any room.
