Pendulum Clocks

The pendulum clock was invented in 1656 by Christian Huygens. This clock used weights and a swinging pendulum and was more accurate than previous clocks. Pendulum clocks cannot be used in vehicles because of their need to be stationary. The motion of the vehicle can cause inaccuracies.

The basics of these first clocks built would not change until the 20th century, during which time electricity was invented. The clock of today can keep time with an accuracy of millionths of a second.

Many of these clocks are still available today and are still working with the same accuracy as when the craftsmen built them. Antique clock collectors often have their favorites proudly displayed in their homes.
