History of Clocks

What is a Clock Anyway? A Look into the History of Clocks

A clock is an instrument used for measuring and recording time, usually with hands or changing numbers to indicate the hour and minute. The clock was first used during the 14th century (about 700 years ago) and is considered one of the oldest human inventions. The word "clock" comes from the French word "cloche" meaning bell.

Before clocks were invented, the only way people could tell the time was by looking at the sun as it crossed the sky. It was the middle of the day, or noon if the sun was directly overhead in the sky. When the sun was close to the horizon, it was either sunset or sunrise. This was not a very accurate way to tell time, but it was the only way during this period of time.
